How to Install StockTracker on Windows When SmartScreen Shows a Warning
The StockTracker Windows installer is not currently digitally signed, so Windows may show a publisher-verification warning when you open it.
What the Windows warning means
Windows SmartScreen checks downloaded files for publisher and file reputation. Because the current StockTracker installer is not digitally signed, Windows cannot show a verified publisher identity for it. You may see a message such as “Windows protected your PC” or an unknown-publisher warning.
This warning means Windows could not establish enough trust for the installer. It is not the same as a message saying that Microsoft Defender detected malware. You should still treat the download carefully and use the official source.
Install the official StockTracker download
- Start from the official StockTracker product page or this article's download link.
- Download the Windows installer and open it.
- If Windows shows the SmartScreen message, select More info.
- Review the file and source details. Select Run anyway only if you intended to download StockTracker from the official source.
- Complete the normal StockTracker installation steps.
If the warning does not offer a Run anyway option, the computer may have Windows 11 Smart App Control enabled or an organization policy that blocks unsigned applications. Do not disable Windows security broadly to install StockTracker. Contact support or use a computer where you are authorized to install the software.
After installation
StockTracker starts in free mode and supports up to five positions. You can enter positions manually or import supported brokerage and spreadsheet files. The paid version is a $20 one-time purchase that unlocks unlimited positions, and updates are free for both free-mode and paid users.
Portfolio files stay on your computer. StockTracker does not require a StockTracker account or an online portfolio service. Internet access is still needed for market-data quotes and update checks.
Why this guidance may change
Digital signing would let Windows verify the publisher identity and would give future releases a consistent signing identity from which reputation can build. Until the installer is signed, this page explains the warning so you can make an informed decision about the official download.
